Tyrewise is a newly implemented tyre stewardship scheme which came into effect on the 1st of March 2024.
The goal of Tyrewise is to collect and process end of life tyres across New Zealand. Currently 40% of end of life tyres are recycled or repurposed in New Zealand. Tyrewise aims to lift that rate to 90% within 6 years.
What's changing? Currently tyre retailers charge ad-hoc fees for disposal of tyres. This is being replaced by the tyre stewardship fee which is paid when the tyre is purchased. Post September 2024 there will be no more tyre disposal fees, you leave your end of life tyre at the retailer or designated collection point and Tyrewise arrange the collection, recycling or repurposing of that tyre.
You'll also notice that invoices involving tyres or products with tyres may change. These have to be transparent either showing the fee or clearly stating that the Tyrewise fee is included in the transaction.
